interview tips for engineering

An interview is a type of conversation between two or more people where questions are asked by the interviewer(s) to obtain information about the interviewee. A job interview is one in which a candidate attends an interview seeking a job. The interviewer(s) assess the interviewee to see if the candidate is suitable for the position.

Job Interview Tips:

* Be ready with your updated résumé, originals and photocopies of them. Do organize and present everything well.
* Do your research and know as much as you can about the company/organization.
* Know the vision and objectives of the organisation.
* Learn as much as you can about the position/job. Access a copy of the job description. Talk to someone employed in the same kind of position. Once you have this information, then make a list of what skills or knowledge you have that would be valuable to them.
* Dress appropriately. Don't wear anything too flashy. Wear neat and clean clothes but not gaudy ones. Look professional without overdoing it.
* Reach the venue at least 15 to 20 minutes ahead of your scheduled interview time.
* Walk slowly and tall upon entering the interview hall.
* Sit up straight.
* Maintain eye contact but do not stare.
* Use facial expressions matching your language.
* Be calm and confident but not tense and confused.
* Be smiling but not serious.
* Be vivid and enthusiastic but not dull and docile.
* Be aware of your posture. Don't have a too much laidback posture or too much of forward bend. Lean slightly forward to show interest.
* Answer questions carefully. Listen carefully to understand the questions. If you do not understand the question do not hesitate to ask the interviewer to clarify it.
* Do not be in a hurry while answering questions. Pause for a while to let the question sink in and then answer.
* Do not be in a hurry while answering. You must learn to pause and organize your thoughts before answering a question. Don't talk too fast or too slow.
* Don't speak too loudly or in low voice.
* Make sure your answers are backed up by sufficient reasoning.
* Make sure your answers are clear, concise and to the point. Be adequate and relevant with your information.
* Thank the interviewer(s) before leaving the interview hall.

Frequently asked questions:

1. Could you tell us about yourself?
Carefully prepare for this first and the most important question and create a positive first impression. Do not bore the interviewer by rambling on about what a hard working candidate you are. Instead, offer a razor sharp sentence or two that sets the stage for further discussion and sets you apart from your competitors. Give the interviewer your Unique Selling Proposition. The USP is a succinct, one-sentence description of who you are your biggest strength and the major benefit that a company will derive from this strength. Answer the question in such a way it will lead to a real discussion, not an interrogation process.
2. What do you know about our company?
Give the answer that shows how much company research you have conducted. Provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. To access information for this question you can start by researching the Company online. Review the "About Us" section of the company website. Use a search engine like Google and locate the company, and then read blogs that mention about it, and also check Discussion Boards and social networking sites. Remember, taking the time to research will help you make a good impression.
3. What interests you about the position you are interviewing for?
Answer this by describing the qualifications listed in the job posting, then connect them to your skills and experience. That way, the employer will see that you know about the job you're interviewing for and that you have the qualifications necessary to do the job.
4. What is your greatest strength?
Talk about your strengths which are relevant to your job and provide concrete and sufficient evidence to convince the interviewer.
5. What is your greatest weakness?
Be frank and admit your weakness and tell what you are doing to rectify it. Do you prefer to work independently? Or in a team? Remember, here the interviewer wants to know if you are a team player or would rather work on your own. Say that you are equally comfortable working as a member of a team and independently. Talk about your assignments/tasks/sports that required a great deal of independent work and research and others where the team effort as most effective.
6. Do you take work home with you?
Say, if required, I will. But try not to give a long answer.
7. How do you handle pressure?
Tell the interviewer that you handle stress by responding to your job situations appropriately. Talk about your stress busters like physical regime, yoga, and aerobics. Discus examples of how you have handled stress earlier.
8. What type of position are you looking for?
Tell the interviewer that you would be willing to take any position that suits your experience and qualifications.
9. Are you interested in a full-time or part-time position?
Tell the interviewer that you are more interested in a full-time position and wouldn't mind considering a part-time position.
10. When can you begin work with us?
Show your willingness to work at their convenience. But be sure when exactly you can join the organisation.
11. How long would you expect to work with us, if hired?
Show your willingness to work for long. But do not give any specific date or year. Instead, put the ball in their court.
12. How much do you expect us to pay?
Do not give any specifics. Instead, give a wide range if need be.
It is hoped these FAQs would help you to improve your job interviewing skills. Practice your replies often to these and other questions. Sit down with a friend and enact the interview as a role play. By repeating certain phrases often you will gain the much needed confidence.

engineering interview problems

Mrs. Suchitra K. Ella
Co Founder & Jt. MD,
Bharat Biotech
What is your present focus area? How is Bharat Biotech unique?
We are working on H1N1 vaccine for Swine flu and also on Rota virus vaccine. We focus on vaccines and recombinant medicines which are produced 100% naturally. Bharat Biotech always works hard to develop innovative products.

Does your company have any association with the colleges?
Yes, We have interactive programmes with JNTU, HCU and several other research institutes. We do go on campus recruitments and train the students.

What is your view on B.Tech Biotechnology?
Simply introducing BTech Bio technology course will not help. This course needs sophisticated science laboratories. Students also must work hard and spend time on practicals to improve their practical knowledge. There should be industry interactive programmes in curriculum to impart practical knowledge to the students.

What are the opportunities for BTech Biotech students?
Biotechnology is not just a subject. It's a wide area where different concepts have to be learnt. It will be more beneficial for the students to opt for MTech and research. There are good research institutes abroad.

Are you recruiting BTech students in your company?
We generally recruit life sciences graduates. We also recruit BTech Biotech students and train them. BTech Instrumentation students also have opportunities in Biotech industries. Chemical Engineering students can find good opportunities in pharma companies.

Which sectors are better for engineering students?
For the last few years IT sector has been providing lot of opportunities. But I feel IT sector in India is not concentrating on product development. So, if the student has a vast knowledge in core subjects then IT would be an additional advantage. The core sectors like manufacturing, infrastructure, electrical etc, are better job providers.

How will be the recruitment process in your company?
Generally our HR team will go through the resumes sent by the candidates and call them for the interview if their skills match with the requirement. The fresher candidates will be trained for at least 2-3 years. The candidates having Ph.D. will be most preferred if their instructors recommend them.

How a resume should look like?
Nowadays most of the candidates are following copy and paste method whi-le preparing their resumes. But that is not the correct approach. Candidates must send different resumes to diff-erent companies based on their requirement. One more thing is single resume should not be sent to all the companies within a single mail. This gives a negative impression on the candidate. Resume should be sent to the HR directly and not to the chairm-an or Director of the company.

What qualities do you look in a fresher?
We see the candidate's attitude, not aptitude. Marks alone will not help him to get a job. Education is like a cycle. It should be a continuous proc- ess. So the candidate must be a good learner and also good team player.

What kind of software programmes / tools are being used in Biotech companies?
We have inbuilt clinical trial programmes. We recruit students who have knowledge of SAS. Some companies need candidates who are strong in programming languages like Bio Perl. Some Pharma companies have installed SAP. They recruit SAP professionals. But they also look for knowledge in Pharma and science subjects.

What are your suggestions to the students?
One should respect teachers and gain the knowledge from them. He should be a continuous learner and understand the concepts. For a student, sharing information is very important. If you have the passion you can achieve whatever you want. Finally don't bother about problems, because every problem is an opportunity.

every problem is an pertinuty

Distance education is an education that aims to deliver education to students who are not physically present. It is often termed as flexible learning as one can handle other commitments along with their studies.
There are two systems of correspondence education: 1. the regular system, and 2. the open system. In the regular system, the qualification requirements for enrolment are similar to those prescribed for the normal university courses. In the open system, the courses are open to any person who may not even possess any formal qualifications. But in some institutions they should have attained the age of 18 years for under-gradate and diploma courses and 21 years for postgraduate courses. Enrolment in some courses is subject to qualifying in a written examination.

Nature of Distance Learning Courses
Distance education institutions offer courses at different levels: first degree, postgraduate degree, diploma and postgraduate diploma, certificate and even research degree (M.Phil. and Ph.D). The courses cover a wide variety of subjects. Apart from the traditional courses in Arts, Science and Commerce, both at first degree and postgraduate degree levels, a large number of professional courses at different levels are also offered. They include teacher education, library and information science, journalism and mass communication, nursing, management and its different branches, computer and information technology and several branches of science, computer and information technology.

Distance education is imparted by three kinds of institutions

* Departments of Correspondence Courses in universities and university level institutions
* Open Universities exclusively involved in imparting higher education through the distance mode, and
* A large number of private institutions mostly offering professional courses.

Distance education Admissions
The mode of distance education admissions may be different depending on the institutes/universities. Some of the institutes conduct entrance exams while others may make the admission process simpler (direct admission). Benefits of Distance Education

* Nowadays the employment market is highly competitive and the best jobs go to persons possessing requisite qualifications only. In many organisations, getting promotions depend on the possession of higher qualifications. So the correspondence courses provide them opportunities to enhance their qualifications.
* As the course fee of these courses is much lesser than the regular courses, distance-learning courses in India have also become popular in the rural areas. Thus the distance learning institutes are serving a very important cause by enabling the less advantaged sections of the society to pursue higher education of their choice.
* In particular, distance education is a boon to housewives, who can use their precious leisure time to enhance their educational qualifications and employment potential.

one last word

One last word...
It is a fact that everyone has many aspirations in life. It may not be possible to achieve all aspirations. Do not get depressed if you have not achieved what you have aspired for. But put in your best efforts. It is not the end of your career if you fail in one examination or the other. You must take it as the first step for success. Be mentally strong enough to face challenges in life. A failure in an examination or a failure in love should not deter you from reaching your goal.
Remember that your parents are the best friends you have. No other person can shower love and affection towards you as much as your parents do. If you have any problem, do not hesitate to discuss with them. At times it might take some time to convince them but do not forget that they are the people who really and sincerely share your pleasure and pain. Never ever try to cheat them.

Respect your fellow students. They also have some aspirations. It is not proper and logical to think that they should listen to you or love you. Be a good friend. Never ever be responsible for any suicides or acid attacks. Wish you all good luck.

About courses and course material
The present generation is very lucky because of the availability of technology. All the information is available on the Internet. There are many sites where solutions, explanations and presentations are all available on the Net. There are video lessons developed by experts on various subjects. All these can be searched in www.google.com. Experts from all IITs, under the leadership of IIT Chennai, have developed video lessons called NPTel (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) which can be downloaded by any student from the website http://nptel.iitm.ac.in

sports

Sports
Develop some liking towards sports. Just academic excellence may not be sufficient to be successful in one's own career. Play at least one game. This will have two advantages. 1) It will keep you fit and healthy and 2) It will be very much useful to relieve the tensions once you join in any job. inter personal skills

It will be entirely a new environment, new friends, new teachers and new ways of learning. There will be a lot of change from the studies at +2 level and the present one. Hence, it is necessary to have a change in the mind set to adjust to the new environment. The purpose of this article is to make them aware of the pros and cons of this change so that, they can mend their ways, if necessary, and be successful because, these four years of study can make or break their career.
The five month impasse and anxiety for the aspiring engineers is finally over, as they have joined in their chosen branch and college through web counseling. Let us welcome them and wish them all a very successful and meaningful college life. Although there may be some dissatisfaction among some of them regarding the branch and the college they are admitted into, it is high time now to think about how best they can utilize this opportunity and be successful in their career. The present scenario of job market in India is very good and all the branches of engineering have plenty of jobs. Hence, students need not worry about the branch. If they are technically sound, and get the degree, there are many jobs for them.

Challenges in the new environment
Last two years must have been hectic for these students in terms of preparations for the IIT entrance and EAMCET examinations. Most of the students might have sacrificed small enjoyments like going to a movie, watching a live cricket match on TV etc. Now, suddenly, they find freedom and feel like relaxing and thus neglecting their studies. My observation over the years is that the top EAMCET rankers may not necessarily be toppers in engineering studies. This is because of the newly found freedom. While in +2 level, all the corporate colleges forcibly make students read in the name of study hours, there will be no one doing that in engineering. The student has to realize this and plan his time effectively. It is sufficient if he/she studies for 3 to 4 hours per day apart from the college hours.

In the first year there will be the three basic science subjects, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Apart from these subjects there will be three more subjects, namely, English, workshop practice and C-programming and numerical methods. The orientation of all these subjects is aimed towards engineering. Hence, it is necessary to inculcate the problem solving habits instead of just understanding the theory. Here the laboratory experiments will play a key role unlike at +2 level, where the laboratories are totally neglected. Another important subject is the C-programming and Numerical methods. Proficiency in this subject helps the student in a long way in his/her career because, any engineering job requires computational and computer skills. At this stage I feel that it is necessary that all the students note the following points.

* All the universities follow semester system from the second year and year-end examination pattern in first year. (JNTU KAKINADA has introduced semester system from 2010-11even in the first year).
* All the universities follow credit based evaluation (not marks as was the case earlier)
* More than 75% of attendance is necessary for appearing for the final examinations in any semester.
* Normally there are two mid examinations and assignments which contribute to the internal marks. (normally 30% and the other 70% is for external examination at the end of the semester)
* Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is given at the end of the exams and not the marks. CGPA is awarded in a 10-point scale.
* Do not expect that the total syllabus will be covered in the class room by the faculty members. You may have to be ready to study on your own some of the last chapters.
* Do not expect the teachers to know everything about the subject. There will also be limitations for them. Never ill-treat your teachers.
* Be genuinely interested in learning. Do not insult if someone asks you any silly question. Some questions you pose may look silly to someone else.

All these points suggest that unless a student plans his studies properly, he/she may end up with difficulties. All these are finally linked again to placements. Any company that comes to campus for placements insists that the students should have minimum CGPA of 6.0 with no backlogs. (Backlog means failing in the examination in the first attempt)

Many students, even though they are good, due to the newly found freedom relax in their academics and fail in the first year subjects. This naturally increases the pressure on them in the subsequent years and reduces their CGPA which ultimately results in rejection of their candidature in the campus placements. Another important aspect is the attendance. They have to maintain more than 75% attendance otherwise, they will not be allowed to sit for the examinations.

There will be no spoon feeding as in +2 level and hence, the student should motivate himself/herself and study. If you want to become a professional, start behaving professionally. Be well dressed, polite and pleasant in manners.

Ragging
Ragging has become a social evil today. Government, Police and the college authorities are taking all efforts to eliminate this. Ragging is a crime and those involved in ragging are severely punishable under law. Although ragging affects the seniors, it is advisable not to give scope for them. After all they are also students and next year you will become seniors as well. Never involve yourself in ragging in any form. If anyone is found in a ragging case, his/her career will be ruined forever. It is an irreparable loss. The best way to avoid it is to keep away from your seniors in the first year. However, if some senior is trying to rag you, it is better to bring that to the notice of the college authorities immediately.

Hostel life
The most enjoyable part of the four year career is the hostel life, though there will be some discomforts like food etc. Certainly it cannot be a substitute for your own home where your mother cooks the food of your choice. However, this is a place to learn many skills like independent living and experiencing the joy of being independent. Few tips to have a memorable hostel life are -

* Be friendly with everybody.
* Do not discriminate anyone with regard to caste, religion or any other aspect.
* Respect other's sentiments although you may not follow them.
* Do not waste your time and other's time.
* Do not get carried away by somebody's statements. Confirm the facts, if necessary.
* Plan your academic schedule and follow scrupulously.
* Do not postpone things.
* Be assertive about your rights but make them known politely.
* Never involve in illegal activities like usage of drugs etc. Initially it may seem exciting but it will lead you to disaster.

Interpersonal skills
In any job it is the team work that matters. Hence everyone after getting his/her degree needs to work in a environment where they have to work in a team, learn how to listen to others views and how to convince others and so on. These interpersonal skills cannot be acquired over night. It is advisable to develop and practice these things. The best way to develop them is to participate in extra-curricular activities like participating in seminars, organizing group discussions, joining as a student member in professional societies and attending the programmes organized by them from time to time etc.

Another important aspect is soft skills. As per the reports, not more than 18% of the passed out candidates are employable. Almost all companies attribute this problem to the poor communication skills, lack of commitment and lack of knowledge in their subject. Learn how to communicate your idea properly. Learn to speak in English. Try to be precise and meaningful when talking about technical points of your subject. It is not necessary that one should be very fluent in English. Convey your thoughts in simple sentences but be precise. This comes only by practice. The best way is to practise with your classmates. It is also a good idea to have discussions about the subjects among the classmates.

Sports
Develop some liking towards sports. Just academic excellence may not be sufficient to be successful in one's own career. Play at least one game. This will have two advantages. 1) It will keep you fit and healthy and 2) It will be very much useful to relieve the tensions once you join in any job. It is also a good idea to inculcate interest in music and dance.

About courses and course material
The present generation is very lucky because of the availability of technology. All the information is available on the Internet. There are many sites where solutions, explanations and presentations are all available on the Net. There are video lessons developed by experts on various subjects. All these can be searched in www.google.com. Experts from all IITs, under the leadership of IIT Chennai, have developed video lessons called NPTel (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) which can be downloaded by any student from the website http://nptel.iitm.ac.in.
